Overview

The OPD (Outpatient Department) area connects front-desk check-in to doctor review. In Solo Doctor & Small Clinic, OPD starts as a queue and status workflow. Full clinical documentation, diagnosis, prescription, and order writes require BioEcko activation before they should be used for live patient care.

Primary app routes include /app/clinical/opd/front-desk for reception check-in and /app/clinical/opd/queue for the doctor queue.

OPD visit workflow

The outpatient visit moves from arrival to clinical note, orders, billing, and follow-up.

The Patient Queue

The OPD queue is the handoff point between reception and doctor. It should show who has checked in, who is waiting, and which encounter is in review. Reception reaches the queue from Front Desk Hub; doctors reach it from Doctor Hub.

Front-desk check-in

Reception uses OPD Front Desk to:

  1. Search for the patient or create a quick registration.
  2. Confirm appointment or walk-in context.
  3. Check the patient in.
  4. Hand the patient to the OPD queue.

If the patient is new, complete Patient Registration before check-in whenever possible.

Doctor queue work

The doctor uses the OPD queue to select the next patient, review status, and complete the clinic's activated encounter workflow. In a small-clinic shell, this can be status-only work. If full clinical notes, diagnosis, prescriptions, lab orders, radiology orders, or file uploads are not activated, continue those parts of care through the clinic's approved manual process.

Billing handoff

After the OPD workflow is complete, Billing/Admin reviews a billing draft in Billing or Creating Bills. Live payment collection, receipt issue, refunds, and ledger posting require BioEcko activation.

Activation checklist

Before using OPD as the live clinical record, confirm activation for:

  • Clinical notes and templates.
  • Diagnosis writes.
  • Prescription writes and print/share workflow.
  • Lab or radiology order writes.
  • Patient chart and document access.
  • Billing draft to payment workflow.

If any item is not activated, train staff on the manual workaround and do not treat the OPD screen as the source of truth for that item.

Notes

Clinic tip

For day-one small-clinic training, practice the queue handoff first: register, check in, open doctor queue, complete activated status work, then review billing draft.

Warning

Do not use OPD clinical notes, diagnosis, prescription, order, or file features for live patient care unless BioEcko has activated them for the clinic.
