Overview

The Operation Theatre module manages the complete surgical workflow -- from surgery scheduling and pre-operative assessment through the intra-operative record to post-operative recovery. It coordinates surgeons, anesthetists, nurses, equipment, and OT rooms to ensure efficient surgical operations.

Surgery Scheduling

Schedule surgeries with:

  • OT calendar with room-wise timeline view
  • Surgeon and anesthetist availability checking
  • Equipment requirement specification
  • Estimated surgery duration with buffer time
  • Priority levels (Elective, Urgent, Emergency)
  • Patient pre-operative checklist auto-generation
  • Consent form linking
  • Blood reservation request to blood bank

The OT dashboard shows today's schedule with real-time status updates (Preparing, In Progress, Closing, Cleaning, Available).

Pre-Operative Assessment

Document pre-op readiness:

  • Pre-anesthetic assessment (PAC) form with ASA classification
  • Airway assessment (Mallampati score)
  • NPO (nil per os) status verification
  • Baseline vitals and lab results review
  • Allergy and medication review
  • Consent verification checklist
  • Surgical site marking confirmation
  • WHO Surgical Safety Checklist (Sign In, Time Out, Sign Out)

The system blocks proceeding to surgery if critical checklist items are incomplete.

Intra-Operative Documentation

Record the surgery:

  • Anesthesia chart (drug doses, vitals at intervals, fluid balance)
  • Operative notes (procedure performed, findings, specimens sent)
  • Implant tracking with serial numbers and manufacturer details
  • Instrument count verification (sponge, needle, instrument counts)
  • Blood products used during surgery
  • Intra-operative complications documentation
  • Duration tracking (anesthesia start, incision, procedure end, extubation)
  • Specimen labeling and pathology request generation

Post-Operative Care

Manage recovery:

  • Recovery room (PACU) monitoring with vitals charting
  • Aldrete score for discharge from recovery
  • Post-operative orders (medications, fluids, diet, activity)
  • Pain assessment documentation
  • Handoff notes from OT nurse to ward nurse
  • Transfer to ward or ICU with auto-bed assignment
  • Post-operative visit scheduling for the surgeon

OT Administration

Administrative features:

  • OT utilization reports (utilization rate, turnover time, cancellation rate)
  • Surgeon-wise surgery statistics
  • Anesthesia type distribution reports
  • Implant usage and cost tracking
  • CSSD integration for instrument set tracking
  • OT cleaning schedule management
  • Equipment maintenance scheduling
  • Monthly OT committee report generation

Notes

Warning

The WHO Surgical Safety Checklist is mandatory. The system will not allow operative notes to be signed unless all three phases (Sign In, Time Out, Sign Out) are completed.

Tip

Use the OT Preference Card feature to save surgeon-specific preferences (instruments, sutures, positioning) for common procedures. This speeds up OT preparation significantly.

Clinic tip

Day surgery centers can use a simplified OT workflow -- skip the IPD admission step and use direct OT booking with same-day discharge.
