Overview
The Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) integration connects Bio Ecko with DICOM-compliant imaging equipment and archival systems. It enables seamless image viewing within the EMR, eliminates film-based workflows, and provides enterprise-wide access to medical images.
DICOM Connectivity
Bio Ecko communicates with imaging equipment via DICOM protocols:
- Worklist (MWL) -- Sends patient and order details to the modality so technicians don't re-enter data
- Storage (C-STORE) -- Receives completed images from modalities and archives them
- Query/Retrieve (C-FIND/C-MOVE) -- Retrieves images from the PACS archive on demand
- WADO-RS -- Web-based image retrieval for the built-in viewer
Supported modalities: X-ray, CT, MRI, Ultrasound, Mammography, PET-CT, C-arm, Endoscopy (with video capture).
Image Viewer
The built-in web viewer supports:
- Multi-frame and multi-series viewing with series thumbnails
- Window/level adjustment (preset: Bone, Lung, Abdomen, Brain, or custom)
- Zoom, pan, rotate, flip, and invert
- Measurement tools (length, angle, ROI statistics, Hounsfield unit display)
- Annotation tools (arrow, text, freehand drawing)
- Comparison view: prior studies side-by-side or linked scrolling
- 3D MPR (Multiplanar Reconstruction) for CT/MRI datasets
- Hanging protocols for standardized display layouts per study type
Image Sharing
Share images securely:
- Generate a shareable link (time-limited, password-protected) for referring doctors
- Patient CD/USB burning with built-in viewer
- DICOM send to external facilities
- Integration with teleradiology services for remote reporting
- ABDM-compliant FHIR DiagnosticReport with image references
Storage & Archiving
Image lifecycle management:
- Online storage for recent studies (SSD-backed, fast access)
- Near-line archive for older studies (cost-optimized storage)
- Configurable retention policies (e.g., 7 years online, then archive)
- Lossless compression to reduce storage costs
- Disaster recovery with geo-replicated backup
- Storage utilization dashboard with growth projections
Configuration
Set up PACS at Admin > Integrations > PACS/DICOM:
- Register DICOM AE titles for each modality
- Configure MWL filters (which orders go to which modality)
- Set up PACS server connection (IP, port, AE title)
- Configure routing rules (auto-forward specific study types)
- Map Bio Ecko locations to DICOM institutions
- Test connectivity with DICOM echo (C-ECHO)
Notes
Info
PACS integration requires network-level connectivity between Bio Ecko's DICOM gateway and your imaging equipment. Work with your IT team to configure firewall rules.
Tip
Enable auto-prefetch of prior studies when a new order is created. This ensures the radiologist has comparison images ready when they start reporting.
Clinic tip
Clinics with a single X-ray or ultrasound machine can use the simplified DICOM setup wizard which auto-discovers the modality on the local network.
