Overview

The ICU module extends the standard IPD workflow with critical care-specific features. It is designed for hospitals with dedicated ICU, MICU, SICU, CCU, or HDU beds.

The module provides a bedside view with continuous monitoring, severity scoring, infusion management, and specialized documentation for ventilated and critically ill patients.

ICU Bedside View

Each ICU bed has a dedicated bedside screen showing:

  • Real-time vital signs (integrated with bedside monitors via HL7)
  • Ventilator parameters (mode, FiO2, PEEP, tidal volume)
  • Active infusions with calculated rates
  • Fluid balance (intake vs output)
  • Latest lab values with critical flags
  • Active medications with next-due times
  • Severity scores (APACHE II, SOFA, GCS)
  • Lines and devices registry (central lines, catheters, drains)

Care Bundles

Pre-configured evidence-based care bundles:

  • Ventilator Bundle -- Head elevation, DVT prophylaxis, oral care, sedation vacation, weaning assessment
  • Central Line Bundle -- Hand hygiene, barrier precautions, chlorhexidine, optimal site, daily review
  • Sepsis Bundle -- Lactate measurement, blood cultures, antibiotics within 1 hour, fluid resuscitation

Nurses document compliance with each bundle element per shift. Non-compliance triggers alerts and is tracked in quality metrics.

Critical Events Log

Document critical events:

  • Cardiac arrest / Code Blue
  • Unplanned extubation
  • Central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI)
  • Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP)
  • Falls
  • Medication errors

Each event triggers an incident report workflow with root cause analysis.

ICU Handover

ICU shift handovers use a structured ISBAR format:

  • Introduction: patient identity and bed
  • Situation: current clinical status
  • Background: admission diagnosis and course
  • Assessment: active problems and plan
  • Recommendation: tasks for incoming shift

Handover data is pre-populated from the patient chart. Both incoming and outgoing staff digitally sign the handover.

Notes

Info

If your facility has a dedicated ICU but limited nursing staff, start with the bedside view and care bundles. The full monitoring integration can be added later.
