Overview

Bio Ecko's AI & Clinical Decision Support (CDS) module assists clinicians with real-time alerts, diagnostic suggestions, and predictive analytics. It runs as a passive advisory layer -- clinicians always retain full decision-making authority. All AI suggestions are clearly marked and require explicit acceptance.

Drug Interaction Alerts

When a clinician prescribes medication, the CDS engine checks:

  • Drug-drug interactions (severity: minor, moderate, major, contraindicated)
  • Drug-allergy cross-references from the patient's allergy list
  • Drug-condition interactions (e.g., metformin in renal failure)
  • Duplicate therapy detection
  • Dose range validation by age, weight, and renal function

Alerts appear as inline warnings in the prescription screen. Major and contraindicated interactions require an override reason before the order can be signed.

Diagnostic Suggestions

The AI engine analyzes clinical data to suggest:

  • Differential diagnoses from symptoms, vitals, and lab results
  • ICD-10 code suggestions from clinical note text
  • Order suggestions -- recommended lab tests or imaging based on the working diagnosis
  • Sepsis screening -- automated SIRS/qSOFA scoring with alerts
  • Critical value alerts -- lab results that require immediate clinical action

Suggestions are displayed in a collapsible panel alongside the clinical workflow. Clinicians can accept, dismiss, or defer suggestions.

Predictive Analytics

Machine learning models provide:

  • Readmission risk -- Predicts 30-day readmission probability at discharge
  • Length of stay prediction -- Estimates remaining days for admitted patients
  • Deterioration alerts -- Early warning score trends that predict clinical deterioration
  • No-show prediction -- Flags appointments with high cancellation probability

All predictions show a confidence score and the contributing factors for transparency.

Configuration

Configure CDS behavior at Admin > Clinical Settings > CDS:

  • Enable/disable individual alert categories
  • Set severity thresholds for interaction alerts
  • Configure which roles see which alert types
  • Manage the drug interaction knowledge base (auto-updated monthly)
  • Review override audit logs
  • Toggle AI suggestions on/off per department

Notes

Warning

AI suggestions are advisory only. They are not a substitute for clinical judgment. The system clearly marks all AI-generated recommendations.

Tip

Review the CDS override audit log monthly to identify patterns -- frequent overrides on the same drug pair may indicate a knowledge base update is needed.

Clinic tip

Start with drug interaction alerts only. They provide the highest safety value with minimal workflow disruption.
