Overview

The Orthopedics module supports musculoskeletal assessment with body-region templates, fracture documentation with classification systems, implant tracking, physiotherapy referral workflows, and surgical planning for joint replacements and trauma procedures.

Musculoskeletal Examination

Region-specific examination templates:

  • Spine: Inspection, palpation, ROM (flexion/extension/lateral bend/rotation), neurological examination (power, reflexes, sensation by dermatome), special tests (SLR, Spurling's, FABER).
  • Upper Limb: Shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand examination with joint-specific tests.
  • Lower Limb: Hip, knee, ankle, foot examination with stability and meniscal tests.
  • Each template includes a body diagram for marking tenderness, swelling, or deformity locations.
  • ROM values are recorded numerically and compared against normal references.

Fracture Documentation

Structured fracture recording:

  • Bone and location selection from an anatomical dropdown (e.g., Femur > Neck > Subcapital).
  • Classification system: AO/OTA classification auto-suggested based on bone and location. Additional systems available (Garden for NOF, Neer for proximal humerus, Weber for ankle, etc.).
  • Displacement description: Angulation, translation, rotation, shortening.
  • Associated injuries: Neurovascular status, compartment assessment, open fracture grading (Gustilo-Anderson).
  • Treatment plan: Conservative (cast/splint type, duration) or surgical (procedure, approach, implant).

Implant Registry

Track all implants used in surgical procedures:

  • Implant details: Manufacturer, model, size, serial number, batch number, sterility expiry.
  • Implant sticker barcode scanning for quick data capture.
  • Patient-implant linkage for recall management.
  • Implant inventory tracking with stock alerts.
  • Registry reports for manufacturer audits and regulatory compliance.
  • Post-market surveillance: Link implant records to follow-up outcomes.

Surgical Planning

Pre-operative tools for orthopaedic surgery:

  • Digital templating: Upload X-rays and overlay implant templates for size estimation (THR, TKR, nailing).
  • Surgical approach documentation: Incision, exposure, procedure steps.
  • Structured op-note templates for: Fracture fixation (nailing, plating, K-wire), Joint replacement (THR, TKR, shoulder), Arthroscopy, Spine surgery, Hand surgery.
  • Post-op protocol: Weight-bearing status, mobilisation plan, DVT prophylaxis, follow-up schedule.

Cast and Splint Tracking

For conservative fracture management:

  • Record cast/splint type, material, date applied.
  • Schedule check X-rays at configured intervals.
  • Track cast changes and removals.
  • Patient instructions: Weight-bearing status, danger signs, follow-up dates.
  • Cast-related complications documentation.

Notes

Tip

Scan the implant sticker barcode during surgery to auto-populate manufacturer, model, size, and batch details -- this saves time and eliminates transcription errors.

Clinic tip

Orthopedic clinics should set up the fracture documentation template first, along with X-ray integration from the Radiology module for seamless image viewing during consultations.
