Overview

The Patient Engagement Portal gives patients self-service access to their health records, appointment booking, bill payments, and communication with their care team. It improves patient satisfaction while reducing front-desk workload.

Patient Self-Service

Patients can:

  • Book and reschedule appointments online.
  • View upcoming appointments and visit history.
  • Access lab reports and radiology results.
  • Download prescriptions and discharge summaries.
  • View and pay bills online (via payment gateway).
  • Update their demographics and contact information.
  • Fill pre-visit questionnaires and health assessments.

Health Records Access

Patients see a simplified view of their medical records:

  • Visit summaries: Date, doctor, diagnosis, prescriptions.
  • Lab results: With normal range indicators and trend charts for serial tests.
  • Imaging reports: Radiology reports (images are viewable if DICOM viewer is enabled).
  • Medications: Current and past prescriptions.
  • Vaccination records.
  • Allergy list.

Access is controlled by your facility's sharing policy -- you choose which record types are patient-visible.

Communication

Secure patient-provider communication:

  • Patients can send non-urgent messages to their care team.
  • Doctors or staff respond within defined SLA timescales.
  • Auto-responses for common queries (working hours, directions, etc.).
  • Appointment reminders and follow-up notifications.
  • Prescription refill requests.

Configuration

Customise the portal under Admin > Settings > Patient Portal:

  • Enable/disable features (appointment booking, bill payment, messaging).
  • Set which record types are visible to patients.
  • Configure branding (logo, colours, welcome message).
  • Set up online payment gateway.
  • Define messaging response SLA.

Tip

Enable online appointment booking first -- it reduces phone calls by 30-40% and lets patients book outside your working hours.

Clinic tip

Even solo doctors benefit from the patient portal. Patients can view their prescriptions and lab results without calling your clinic.
